Xcacel Sea Turtle Sanctuary

PROJECT 2: Supporting the Development of the Sanctuary’s Core Infrastructure, Re-Planting Native Vegetation & Beach Clean Up:

In 2019, Positive Legacy expanded our dedication to saving the sea turtles with a $20,000 grant to the Xcacel Sanctuary for core infrastructure improvements. Our focus during phase one of the project include creating a second story to an existing building to become the main offices for the park’s organizers, refurbishing the existing septic system to adequately manage the waste water throughout the year.  Positive Legacy will also be supporting the removal of invasive species of plants throughout the sanctuary.

The sea turtle conservation program covers 13 nesting beaches that total 34 km of beach, which makes it the largest program of its kind in the country.

PROJECT 1: Improving Infrastructure, Re-Planting Native Vegetation & Beach Clean Up with Flora, Fauna y Cultura Sanctuary

In 2018, Positive Legacy collaborated with Flora, Fauna y Cultura Sanctuary for multiple days filled with ecological conservation and community action! The beautiful beach, Xcacel, that we visited is a sea turtle sanctuary and educational center aimed at the protection, research and conservation of sea turtles nesting on the coasts of Quintana Roo. Sea turtles demonstrate the ultimate lesson of ecology – that everything is connected. Sea turtles are part of two vital ecosystems, beaches and marine systems. If sea turtles become extinct, both the marine and beach ecosystems will be impacted.

We are honored to team up with Flora, Fauna y Cultura to support their mission to improve the quality of life in the region by promoting the ecological value and conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of Mexico and a grant of $12,500. Their projects throughout the local community and green areas nurture their vision of a world in which natural and cultural heritage are respected and shared for the benefit of all. Their program for sea turtle conservations covers 13 nesting beaches that total 34 km of beach, which makes it the largest program of its kind in the country.
