Positive Legacy Programming Recap at Holidaze 2018

The Holidaze crew in Puerto Morelos helped support Positive Legacy’s continuing work in the nearby community, Central Vallarta.  Through a strong, meaningful Day of Service, a successful auction, medical and school supply donations, and some serious bartending skills from our musicians, we helped fund grants that work on improving the village residents’ lives.  We loved sharing this experience with the Holidaze group, as it provides a bigger meaning to the whole event!

Day of Service & Cultural Connection with Positive Legacy

We had many new Holidaze fans join us, along with a wonderful turnout of musicians, their families and the Cloud 9 team!  We traveled 20 minutes to Central Vallarta where we completed a mural on the new schoolhouse which we helped build in years past, painted the new medical clinic we funded, finished the newly built garden bed wall, painted playground equipment, and then made and played with pinatas!

After finishing our work, we headed over to the community cenote where a delicious, locally-catered lunch awaited us.  Our group enjoyed cliff-diving, zip-lining and just swimming in the cool, natural pool waters. The Treefunkers band got everyone warmed up for the day’s upcoming music, and the monkeys, as always, entertained us, while they stole multiple glasses of hibiscus tea and tortillas.

One of our attendees shares her experience here: “Participating in the Positive Legacy excursion was educational, rewarding and fun! It is great to get to meet the local community and see the difference this organization and music lovers are making for the local people. They are doing great work and making a difference in people’s lives. And I was stoked to visit and swim in a cenote and experience some unique local nature too. So beautiful! “- Amanda G

Positive Legacy Charity Auction

The Holidaze 2018 auction had a fantastic mid-day turnout and raised $14,420!  The musicians donated amazing items such as VIP festival tickets, signed memorabilia, and uniquely designed playbills.  Their fans also provided Positive Legacy with original auction entries such as jewelry, carved wood event art, and even a six-night lodge stay outside of Rocky Mountain State Park.  Once again, photographers Dave Vann and Josh Timmermans donated their talent and time with some amazing, autographed shots of our Holidaze musicians.

Charity Bartending Benefiting Positive Legacy

Who wouldn’t want one of these guys making them a drink? Positive Legacy would like to send a big shout out to Aron from The Disco Biscuits & Brendan from Umphrey’s McGee for collecting over $500 in tips from your swift and delicious refreshments.  We thank you for generously donating your time, and making the bar patrons happy!

Donation Drive

Thank you to everyone that donated to the Positive Legacy donation drive this year!  The medical and school supplies that the fans brought were delivered to our Central Vallarta friends. They will be used with gratitude!

Offset Your Carbon Footprint

Positive Legacy and Trees, Water & People made it easy to travel responsibly by offsetting the emissions from your travel to Mexico for Holidaze. We appreciate those that donated the suggested $15 to the carbon offset program, which supports a community tree nursery that is producing 10,000 trees a year for rural communities on the north coast of Haiti, providing the sequestration of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide emissions. RECAP of our Positive Legacy Programs During Dominican Holidaze 2017

Positive Legacy is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to integrate music and service to benefit people and the environment. Working in conjunction with Cloud 9 Adventures, Positive Legacy coordinates service projects for destination events in many different countries. Fueled by the power of music, and a passion for sustainability, Positive Legacy strives to transcend cultural boundaries by learning about the needs and aspirations of the communities we visit and serving them with action from musicians and fans!

Check out all the GOOD Positive Legacy did at Dominican Holidaze:

Day of Service & Cultural Connection with Positive Legacy

We had a very meaningful Day of Service in the village of Domingo Maiz, Veron where we have been working on a long term clean water and waste management project for the past six years. We began the day by touring the now fully functional black water bio-filtration system as well as the site for the next phase of potable water.  We continued our morning by grouping local youth with community elders and Positive Legacy volunteers to clean the streets in the central area of the village, while others worked with the children to re-paint a community mural.

When that work was done, we enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by the Punta Cana Ecological Foundation chefs, while a local meringue band entertained the group.  We also gifted the school and medical donation drive supplies brought by the Holidaze fans. Lastly, after lunch we began the prototype for the three stream waste management stations, to introduce recycling/composting to the village, which will be completed at our next event here in March. The day closed out with dancing and games as we celebrated our cultural connection. We would like to thank our partners for hosting us, the Dominican Holidaze fans for joining us and the community members for participating in a memorable day.

Day of Service with Positive Legacy

We had an amazing day of community connection at the Punta Cana Ecological Foundation! 40 students from Domingo Maiz joined us for a boat ride, snorkeling and learning about the Foundation’s innovative coral reef restoration efforts. They younger children enjoyed planting native flora on the portion of the beach dedicated to improving the habitat for sea turtles to lay their eggs. Than we came together for a delicious traditional Dominican lunch and danced to live local music. We enjoyed playing games and gifted the donation drive supplies to the children, which was collected from the Holidaze fans. To finish the day we toured the Foundation’s bee keeping and composting areas, learning how they process waste in an effective, sustainable way. We would like to thank our partners for hosting us, the Holidaze fans for joining us and the community members for participating in a memorable day!

Partner Information

Positive Legacy has Partnered with the Punta Cana Ecological Foundation since 2012. With the help from fans like you, we have been able to donate just over $50,000 to contribute to the construction of a Natural Waste Water Treatment facility and a clean water distribution system to the community of Veron near Punta Cana. The waste water treatment facility utilizes grasses and native plants to naturally extract toxins in the water. This is a natural system that will likely be duplicated in areas around the Caribbean! The completion of the natural waste water treatment facility which took place in 2014 is step one in the three step plan to provide a sustainable water system to the 500 residents of this area called Domingo Maiz. Once Positive Legacy and their partners have seen this five-year project through the residents will have a functional waste water treatment facility, a solid waste management system, and safe drinking water. We hope that on completion this area will then provide other communities with a model of how to create these essentials in their own community.

Positive Legacy Recap

Dominican Holidaze 2014

Donation Drive

With the help of Dominican Holidaze guests Positive Legacy was able to donate some much needed supplies to the community of Veron during the Day of Service and Cultural Connection. The school supplies and medical supplies donated by guests will be distributed throughout the community’s education programs and medical facilities as needed.

Day of Service & Cultural Connection

Dominican Holidaze guests were able to see a Positive Legacy funded project in action on the Dominican Holidaze Day of Service and Cultural Connection. Guests traveled outside of the resort to a community called Veron near Punta Cana where Positive Legacy donated $25,500 to help fund a Natural Waste Water Treatment facility. This part of the Fuentes de Vida (sources of life) project has now been completed and is providing 500 Veron residents with wastewater services to keep contamination out of the local aquifer. The day started with a tour of the working project. Then guests were joined by the local children for a community wide trash pick-up. After that everyone joined together for lunch and local music. Before departing for the day, Dominican Holidaze guests and community members gathered together to paint a mural over-looking the project. Positive Legacy will continue to work with the Punta Cana Ecological Center and their partners on the completion of this three-step process. Next up is providing safe drinking water to all residents in Veron. Thank you to all the fans that participated in this meaningful day.

Charity Auction

Positive Legacy’s humanitarian and environmental projects are mostly funded from charity auction proceeds. In fact 100% of proceeds from the auctions go directly towards projects such as the Fuentes de Vida project in Veron. The Positive Legacy Charity Auction during Dominican Holidaze was a success and the financial goal was met. Thanks to all of the guests that came out to bid on the unique items from Dominican Holidaze artists. Special thanks goes to Dave Vann and Josh Timmermans for providing wonderful photography for the auction.

Offset Your Carbon Footprint

Positive Legacy and Trees, Water & People once again were able to make it easy to travel responsibly, by offering an offsetting of the travel emissions for travel to the Dominican Republic for Dominican Holidaze. Offset donations supported a community tree nursery that is producing 10,000 trees a year for rural communities on the north coast of Haiti, providing fruit, improved soil quality, timber and the sequestration of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide emissions over their lifetimes.

2013

December 16-20, 2013 - Puerto Morelos, Mexico

Leaving a Positive Legacy during Mayan Holidaze

On December 18th, day three of Mayan Holidaze, Positive Legacy and Mayan Holidaze guests participated in a Community Celebration at the Casa Cultura in the nearby town of Puerto Morelos. This was a wonderful opportunity for guests to help break down cultural barriers and connect with youth and community members through music.  We joined together with local students, musicians and dancers in an afternoon outside of the “tourist bubble.”

The Community Celebration as well as Positive Legacy’s silent and live auctions at Mayan Holidaze supported local not-for-profit medical services, student scholarships and other charitable projects on the Yucatan.  Mayan Holidaze guests also helped by bringing school and medical supplies for donation to local organizations. Thank you to all of the guests and artists that helped to leave a Positive Legacy in Mexico!

2012

December 17-21, 2012 - Tulum, Mexico

We came, we saw, we SURVIVED the ending of the Mayan calendar and it all was quite magical. Not only did all the bands capture the essence with musical highlights, but there was a vibe among the crowd…an understanding that change is necessary, new thinking and positive actions are required if we want to continue with this beautiful life we lead. Mayan Holidaze 2012 was a simply wonderful week.

Phoenix School Building & Expansion Project

In 2012 Positive Legacy donated $20,000 to build a new school located in Tulum, Mexico. The vision of The Phoenix School (formerly named Amanecer School) speaks to their belief that we are interconnected as holistic beings always in the process of learning. This school is a nonprofit cooperative based on a humanistic approach to learning, personal development and social transformation. The school curriculum incorporates ancient Mayan wisdom and practices, the cultivation of native plants and a respect for nature, as well as today’s modern technological tools. Positive Legacy provided the funding to renovate the existing structure on the site where the school will grow and develop over time, build a new kitchen, multipurpose room, bathrooms, outdoor amphitheatre, and to cover some of the initial operating expenses. In 2013 the school has transitioned into a Montessori school.

Day Of Service & Celebration at the Phoenix School with Break Science

What a beautiful day we shared with the kids at the Phoenix School with a performance by Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee of Break Science! The children greeted the Mayan Holidaze guests with a moving opening ceremony of Mayan song and dance, and with a demonstration of their daily yoga and mediation practice. We joined them by calling in the four directions and honoring Mother Earth and Father Sky. The rest of the day was spent painting murals throughout the school, building a fuel-efficient cookstove, making new friends with the children and their families, and enjoying a delicious traditional lunch. Thank you to Adam and Borahm for providing us with some great tunes!

Donation Drive for Phoenix School

Thank you to the Mayan Holidaze guests for bringing school supplies and other items requested by the school. The kids at the school will benefit from your generosity for many months to come.

Donation To Uyo’olche

Positive Legacy donated $1500 to the Mexico based NGO, Uyo’olche, to build and install clean burning cookstoves in homes in Tulum and the surrounding region. We are thrilled that Positive Legacy’s project in Tulum was the impetus for a new partnership between Uyo’olcheand Trees, Water & People. Clean Cookstoves, like the one we built for the school, reduce firewood consumption in the kitchen, thus reducing unhealthy exposure to smoke and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 50%!

Carbon Offsetting

Thank you to Trees, Water & People for their ongoing partnership and onsite outreach and support provided for carbon offsetting. We invite Mayan Holidaze guests to offset their emissions associated with their travel to/from Tulum. TWP has facilitated the construction of over 50,000 clean cookstoves in Central America and the Caribbean since 1998, reducing families’ exposure to toxic indoor air pollution and drastically reducing the amount of firewood and charcoal needed to cook a simple meal. Click here to donate to TWP’s carbon offset program, and we will channel your intentions toward solutions that tangibly improve life and the environment in the region of Tulum.

Charity Auction

The Mayan Holidaze auction brought in $7,000! The funds raised by the auction will allow us to continue making music work for communities. Thank you to the photographers, artists and guest who donated items, as well as the guests who placed bids and took something special home with them.
