Here are some EASY and FUN ways to engage with Positive Legacy at Closer to the Sun 2021:

Recycled Craft Activity - Tawashi Making | Event Day 2 | 1:30-2:30 PM | Positive Legacy HQ (Hacienda Lobby)

Come make a homemade “zero-waste” woven kitchen sponge using recycled materials! Originating in Japan, a tawashi is a scrubbing brush for wet cleaning traditionally made from the fibers of the windmill palm. Nowadays, tawashi includes any form of sponge used for rubbing and washing. This fun and free eco-friendly 'craftivity' is first come, first serve.

Day of Service | Event Day 3 | 10:00-11:30 AM or 12:30-2:00 PM | Convention Center

Food insecurity is devastating Mexico, and the pandemic has only exacerbated this inequity. The Mexican government does not provide assistance such as national unemployment benefits, so to say that our friends in the resort communities have been greatly affected by the pandemic is an understatement. We want to take this opportunity to support those who have been so good to us in our home away from home for all these years.

Join Positive Legacy, in partnership with Mike’s Amazing, in the morning or afternoon of Event Day 3 for a short 1.5-hour shift assembling food & supply boxes for families in need throughout Quintana Roo.

Bingo w/ HIRIE | Event Day 4 | 12:30-1:30 PM | Heaven Pool

It’s the game we all know and love! While enjoying your afternoon by the pool, come join us in a game of musical BINGO to benefit Positive Legacy! As the songs play, you guess the name and fill in your card for the chance to win great prizes! $20 cash donation for 2 games. Play with your friends, have fun and listen to some of your favorite songs!

Common Kings Acoustic Set & Live Auction | Event Day 4 | Music: 6:15-7:15 PM | Live: 7:15 PM | Positive Legacy HQ (Hacienda Lobby)

Enjoy a special acoustic set from Common Kings and bid on one of a kind items in our live auction that you can’t find anywhere else!

Online Auction closes Event Day 4 | 7:30 PM

Bid on autographed photos, concert tickets, and unique memorabilia from Closer to the Sun musicians during the online auction! Auction proceeds support Positive Legacy’s environmental and humanitarian projects.

Offset Your Carbon Footprint anytime at Positive Legacy HQ (Hacienda Lobby)

Positive Legacy and Trees, Water & People make it easy to travel responsibly by offsetting the emissions from your travel to Mexico. A $15 carbon offset donation will support a community tree nursery that is producing 10,000 trees a year for rural communities on the north coast of Haiti, providing fruit, improved soil quality, timber, and the sequestration of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide emissions over their lifetimes. Take this opportunity to feel empowered and leave your own Positive Legacy during Closer to the Sun! Stop by Positive Legacy HQ to make a donation or take action online!

Positive Legacy has worked with Closer to the Sun since 2014, raising over $129,000 to support local nonprofit organizations in Mexico!

Funds raised at CTTS have supported:

  • Xcacel Sea Turtle Sanctuary for park improvements, beach cleanups and to build housing for biologists

  • Building a community center that doubles as a schoolhouse and medical center in Central Vallarta

  • Supporting the Flora y Fauna community garden

  • Developing a community space for Casa de la Cultura in Puerto Morelos

  • An urban garden initiative in Puerto Morelos

In accordance with these grants, Positive Legacy has led six Days of Service giving Closer to the Sun guests the opportunity to visit the project and get their hands dirty working on it themselves.

(2019) Day of Service guest Brooke from Denver shared with us: “I look forward to this day of service every time I come to Closer To The Sun :) So grateful to be a part of such an amazing group of humans! Thank you for taking such good care of us when we are away from the resort. Sooo much love!”

Another highlight of Closer to the Sun is the annual Name That Tune BINGO, which has been hosted by the likes of SOJA, Thievery Corporation, Dirty Heads and Pepper. In 2019, Positive Legacy also hosted the inaugural Closer to the Pin Classic Golf Tournament, and was honored to be joined by members of Fortunate Youth.

In addition to fundraising activities, Positive Legacy has collected donations each year from festival attendees to be distributed to small Mayan villages via our friends at Dreams for Mayan Children. Thanks to all the fans who have filled their suitcases with medical supplies, school supplies and sporting goods for the donation drive!
