Positive Legacy is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to integrate music and service to benefit people and the environment. Working in conjunction with Cloud 9 Adventures, Positive Legacy coordinates service projects for destination events in many different countries. Fueled by the power of music, and a passion for sustainability, Positive Legacy strives to transcend cultural boundaries by learning about the needs and aspirations of the communities we visit and serving them with action from musicians and fans!

Join Slightly Stoopid along with a full support lineup for an all inclusive concert vacation in paradise & read on for how you can get involved with Positive Legacy while in Mexico!

Day of Service & Cultural Connection with Positive Legacy

Join Positive Legacy at Xcacel Beach for a Day of Service and ecological conservation! The beautiful beach is one of the only remaining undeveloped beaches on the Yucatan Peninsula which turtles come to nest every year.

Xcacel focuses on the preservation of nesting grounds for sea turtles of the Caribbean. The park is

open to the public for a fee for the months of December to April and closed for hatching season

from May to November.

In July 2019, Positive Legacy provided a $20,000

grant to the Sanctuary for their housing project.

The Phase One project will consist of building a

permanent second story structure on to the

existing park office to house volunteers throughout

the hatching season, approximately 28 individuals.

The volunteers assess the health of the mothers,

collect data on tags and size, date and protect the

nests throughout the night. Nests typically take two

months to hatch and when they do, the volunteers help transfer the baby sea turtles from

the nest closer to the ocean. In addition to the volunteer housing, we will remodel of the

existing restrooms in conjunction with replacing the plumbing infrastructure to the septic

system to adequately treat the waste the park generates throughout the year.

We are excited to be returning to the park for a 2nd year of Day of Service activities! We

will spend the morning working on various projects in conjunction with 3 additions DOS

events in 2020. Our projects include; removing invasive plants, laying the groundwork for

the new Xcacel Welcome Center and cleaning up the beach, to name a few.  After

completing the morning projects, we will celebrate with music, enjoy authentic Mexican

lunch and have the opportunity to go swimming in the beautiful Caribbean sea.

Carbon Offset - Trees Water & People

Positive Legacy and Trees, Water & People make it easy to travel responsibly by offsetting the emissions from your travel to Mexico for Closer to the Sun. Since our partnership began in 2007, we have planted over 200,000 trees that sequester CO2 and have provided 500 clean cookstoves to reduce emissions from cooking with firewood, improving family health. Together, we offer music festival attendees an opportunity to offset their CO2 footprint, including the emissions required to get you to the festival, plus your share of the festival emissions themselves. A CO2 offset is a voluntary donation to TWP that helps us fund these initiatives in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Empower yourself to leave a Positive Legacy at Closer to the Sun by OFFSETTING YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT HERE…because every party has an impact!

Day of Service & Cultural Connection with Positive Legacy

Guests joined us for a day of work and celebration at the beautiful beach, Xcacel, with local NGO Flora, Fauna y Cultura. This beach is a Turtle Sanctuary that maintains protection of nesting areas and the mangroves near the beach.  The turtles born here this year will return to lay their own eggs as adults.

Everyone worked hard in the morning, contributing their artistic skills by painting signage or their dedication by collecting trash from the nesting areas.  In addition to larger items, the amount of micro-trash, from juice box straws and plastic bottle caps and small pieces of styrofoam containers, was disheartening.

Guest Kristin Costello from New Hampshire shares; “Thank you for always including the day of service at Closer to the Sun. Today was eye-opening on how much unnecessary waste ends up on the beaches. The styrofoam was the worst to see. I will continue doing my part to make better choices. We 💗 Positive Legacy!”

Our goal was to support the facilities on-site by contributing to ecological conservation of both plants and animals. We celebrated our work with locally made eats while listening to a “dream jazz” duo, and followed it up with swimming in the blissful Caribbean sea!

Thank you to all our participants in the Day of Service, it was a memorable and educational experience for us!

Positive Legacy Charity Auction

Positive Legacy Charity Auction

We are pleased to announce that Positive Legacy was able to raise over $31,000 in this year’s charity auction!  Auction proceeds will support Positive Legacy’s continued environmental & humanitarian projects in Mexico.

The Closer to the Sun auction was a true team effort!  Guests put countless hours into creating one-of-a-kind items, artists made donations and musicians dedicated their time to signing items curated by the team. Jimi Jazz Jam (featuring Jimi Jazz, Karl Denson and Jeff Franca) committed to playing live music, and everyone participated in bidding to raise money for those in need. It takes a village and we are one!

A special thanks to Josh Timmermans and Dave Vann for the amazing photography they donate each and every year, and to Seth Weiner for his professional rock-tioneering!

Name That Tune Poolside BINGO w/ HASH of Thievery Corporation

Thank you to our BINGO hosts Seth Weiner and Hash from Thievery Corporation for an entertaining BINGO afternoon benefiting Positive Legacy!  Your BINGO cards & shenanigans raised over $800 to fund grants in the region and support our next trip around the sun!

Poolside Casino with Robbie and Lou Lou from Thievery Corporation

What a silly afternoon of wild casino games! Heads or tails? Who raced the fastest in a mermaid tail? Who won Rock, Paper,Scissors?

Funds were raised (almost $400 for the charity cause), prizes were given, and lots of laughs were had during the poolside casino hour. Special shout out to those who joined in on the fun and supported Positive Legacy!

Thank You For Donating!

The items you brought down and contributed were delivered to our local non-profit  partner Dreams for Mayan Children for community distribution.  Your donations will make many children and families’ lives brighter this holiday season!

You Can Still Offset Your Carbon Footprint

Positive Legacy and Trees, Water & People made it easy to travel responsibly by offsetting the emissions from your travel to Mexico for Closer to the Sun. We appreciate those that donated $15 to the carbon offset program, which supports a community tree nursery that is producing 10,000 trees a year for rural communities on the north coast of Haiti, providing the sequestration of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide emissions. If you were unable to offset you footprint at the event, please take this opportunity to still feel empowered to leave your own Positive Legacy from Closer the the Sun by OFFSETTING YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT HERE…because every party has an impact!

CLOSER TO THE SUN

2017

On Friday December 15th, Closer to the Sun fans joined the Positive Legacy Team for a memorable visit to the nearby community, Central Vallarta. We met the locals at the community building which serves as a schoolhouse for the local children, a center for adult education classes, and medical structure. The building also serves as a hurricane shelter to the locals whose straw roof and dirt floor homes might be damaged or flooded during storms.

Together we painted a mural, built garden beds and cleared the ground for foundation to be laid for the new building structure which Positive Legacy has provided grant funds to be built. This new structure will double the capacity for all community space needs, meeting the much needed demand for more space. After our hard work we enjoyed a refreshing swim in a nearby cenote and we entertained each other on the zip-line and cliff jumping into the cenote. We enjoyed a traditional Mexican lunch and jazz music from the local band, The Caribbean Quartet, who also backed G. Love for an intimate treat. We ended the day with a traditional pinata which was a crowd pleaser, especially for the kids! We’d like to give a big thanks to all the fans who joined us and to G. Love for the intimate entertainment! We are humbled by your involvement in our projects and support for Positive Legacy!

Day of Service with Positive Legacy

We had a meaningful Day of Service at the Flora y Fauna Community Garden site!

We began the day by hauling in timber to be used to form the new beds, building the beds, filling them with soil and then planting habenero peppers, cucumbers, cantaloupe and zucchini. We worked with some of the families that will be participating in the garden program to put food on their tables.

When that work was done, we then enjoyed playing games and gifted the Closer to the Sun donation drive supplies to the children and enjoying a lunch prepared with ingredients from the Puerto Morelos Botanical Gardens, where Closer to the Sun guests had previously worked to rehabilitate the medicinal garden facilities.   We closed out the day dancing to music from the local band the “Tree Funkers.” We would like to thank our partners for hosting us, the Closer to the Sun fans for joining us and the community members for participating in a memorable day!

Our main objective with “Fauna Flora y Litoral, A.C.” is training on how to sustainably produce food in small areas like backyards and rooftops in urban areas. The program will be aimed at children and adults in impoverished areas.

Small sustainable farms are the answer to the needs of food production in rural and urban populations to help those most in need, such as seniors, children, housewives. This program also empowers the community to earn an income, as their surpluses are likely to be marketed.

Recap of our Positive Legacy Programs During Closer to the Sun 2016

2016

2015

Positive Legacy and Closer to the Sun guests worked together to give back the local community and leave a positive impact during our visit to Mexico.

Day of Service with Positive Legacy

Closer to the Sun guests joined Positive Legacy for a meaningful day of service and cultural connection in the community of Puerto Morelos, Mexico. We started our day at the Casa de la Cultura, the community center for the town. Our first project was to clear a space for an herb garden to support Casa de la Cultura’s outdoor kitchen. Then the local children joined us to paint tables and play games.

Each child was sent home with their own collection of school supplies. Most of these children do not attend school so these supplies are a well received gift and hopefully will help foster creativity and learning in their home environment. After enjoying a locally prepared lunch a member of the National Park taught us about the importance of the health and protection of the Mesoamerican Reef; the world’s second largest barrier reef. A portion of this reef sits right off the shore in this area. Once we learned about the reef, we were able to end the day with a snorkeling adventure to explore the reef in person. Thank you to everyone for coming out to help create such an impactful, memorable day!

The Positive Legacy Auction Raised Just Over $20,000

We are pleased to announce that with your help, Positive Legacy was able to raise just over $20,000 in this year’s charity auction! The energy in the lobby was palpable, and Zach Deputyprovided groovin’ tunes for everyone to enjoy while the auction continued.  Auction proceeds will support Positive Legacy’s environmental & humanitarian projects with local non-profits such as Casa de la Cultura and the National Park. Thank you to all of you who purchased an auction item. A special thank you to the musicians for supporting the auction with special one of a kind items and to the patron artisans who donated their art!

Donation Drive - Thank you all for donating!

Thank you to everyone that donated to the Positive Legacy donation drive this year! The donations collected during Closer to the Sun were disbursed to the local children and their families who joined us in our Day of Service. With items ranging from clothing, shoes, pencils, notebooks, crayons and markers- YOU were able to make a huge impact on the community’s quality of life.

Musical Poolside BINGO - Hosted by Pepper

A big spicy thank you must go out to this year’s hosts Pepper for creating a shenanigan filled BINGO afternoon benefitting Positive Legacy. Thank you to all of you who joined in the fun and supported the cause!

Positive Legacy Recap

Closer to the Sun 2014

Donation Drive

Thank you to all of the Closer to the Sun guests that brought school supplies, gardening supplies, & medical supplies for the Positive Legacy donation drive. We collected a great amount of supplies to donate to the local schools in Puerto Morelos.

Day of Service & Cultural Connection

Closer to the Sun guests were invited to join Positive Legacy for the kick-off the Urban Garden Initiative in Puerto Morelos. The day of service took place at the ECOSUR Botanical Gardens where guests and students were able to get their hands dirty building garden beds and planting in the gardens. After working in the gardens, everyone gathered for a locally catered lunch and some sweet sounds by the local musicians in the natural amphitheater. The day concluded with a tour of the Botanical Gardens where guests were able to see the natural jungle of Mexico and view the mangrove systems leading out to the ocean. Positive Legacy was able to grant Puerto Morelos $24,000 for their Urban Garden Initiative thanks to music fans like you! We are all looking forward to seeing how our legacy continues through the Urban Garden Initiative and hope to see the gardens multiplying throughout the community. Thanks to all of you who joined the day of service!

Charity Auction

Positive Legacy was overwhelmed with the support from the fans and artists during Closer to the Sun. The charity auction on the last night of Closer to the Sun raised just over $11,000! Thanks to all of the guests that came out to bid on the unique items from Closer to the Sun artists. 100% of proceeds from the Positive Legacy auctions go directly towards projects such as the Urban Garden Initiative in Puerto Morelos. Positive Legacy’s humanitarian and environmental projects are mostly funded from these charity auction proceeds. Special thanks goes to all of the bands that contributed to the auction and also Dave Vann and Josh Timmermans for providing wonderful photography for the auction.

Offset Your Carbon Footprint

Positive Legacy and Trees, Water & People once again were able to make it easy to travel responsibly, by offering an offsetting of the travel emissions for travel to Mexico for Closer to the Sun. Offset donations supported a community tree nursery that is producing 10,000 trees a year for rural communities on the north coast of Haiti, providing fruit, improved soil quality, timber and the sequestration of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide emissions over their lifetimes.
