Day of Service & Sustainable Experience
We want to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who joined us for our Day of Service and Ecological Conservation at Xcacel, a stunning beach and turtle sanctuary near the Hard Rock Hotel. We spent the morning working on various projects like clearing pathways with machetes to the beach and the cenote on the property, and doing a huge beach cleanup.
Our days projects are connected to a bigger picture project for the nature reserve. In 2019, Positive Legacy gave a $20,000 grant to Xcacel to build housing for the biologists and volunteers who live and work at the park from April-November, protecting the nesting turtles. The grant also supports a Welcome Center at the park, which will be there to educate visitors about the importance of ecological conservation and minimizing plastic consumption. The creation of this park will help ensure the longevity of the Sanctuary’s establishment, as there is always a risk that the land could be sold and developed for commercial use. It is important to spend time supporting people and projects that create healthier ecosystems and environments for people and the planet.
After our mornings work, we were rewarded with sweet songs from local musician, Rodrigo Lopez Ray. We enjoyed a locally made lunch, and then had free time on the pristine beach and swimming in the refreshing Carribean ocean.
Thank you to all our participants in the Day of Service, it was incredible to see how many helping hands can achieve so much in a short amount of time!
Positive Legacy Charity Auction
A huge thank you to everyone who showed up in the Hacienda Lobby and participated in the bidding at our Charity Auction! With your support we raised $30,000 which will support Positive Legacy’s continued environmental & humanitarian projects in Mexico. We also dedicated an auction table to Brandi Carlile’s nonprofit Looking Out Foundation, and were able to raise $7,000 for her foundation’s causes.
We’d like to thank Yola for hosting a costume contest during the silent auction which brought out an energetic crowd while fans bid on photos, posters and unique GJWW art pieces. A special thanks to Dave Vann for the amazing photography he donated and to Brandi and all the artists for their generous donations!
Name that Tune Bingo with Amanda Shires
Thank you to Amanda Shires and everyone else who joined us for a hilarious afternoon at the Heaven Pool playing BINGO to benefit Positive Legacy! So many Just Wanna Weekend fans joined in on the musical game, it helped us raise over $1,900 which will be returned to the region to support humanitarian and environmental improvement efforts! Special thank you to TomBoyX for donating some awesome prizes to give away!
Thanks for packing school and medical supplies to bring with you on your vacation! The items you contributed were delivered to small, rural villages in the jungle near Laguna Bacalar. Guests donated SO much that were were able to spread the goods to the following small towns: Chan Veracruz, X-Hazil Sur, Noh-bec, Chacchoben, Pedro Antonio Santos, Buena Vista, Xul-Xa, Huay-Pix, Juan Serabia and Ucum. Your donations have made children and families’ lives brighter
Carbon Offset - Trees, Water & People
Positive Legacy and Trees, Water & People made it easy to travel responsibly, by offsetting the emissions from your travel to Girls Just Wanna Weekend! We appreciate those that donated $15 to the carbon offset program, which supports a community tree nursery that is producing 10,000 trees a year for rural communities on the north coast of Haiti, providing the sequestration of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide emissions. If you were unable to offset you footprint at the event, please take this opportunity to still feel empowered to leave your own Positive Legacy from Girls Just Wanna Weekend by visiting treeswaterpeople.org to make a donation, because every party has an impact!
Positive Legacy Recap at Girls Just Wanna Weekend 2019
Funds raised at the inaugural Girls Just Wanna Weekend supported a wide variety of grant projects Positive Legacy supports across the Caribbean! Here is the recap from the Positive Legacy events at Girls Just Wanna Weekend 2019:
Day of Service & Cultural Connection with Positive Legacy
It was a perfect day for work at Xcacel, a local Turtle Sanctuary, run by the organization Ibanqroo. After a night out enjoying music by The Indigo Girls and others, guests woke up early and joined us to do important service work and give back.
At Xcacel we work hard protecting, educating and supporting the flora and fauna in their community, on the beach and in the surrounding jungle. Four types of turtles nest here every year, and it’s also home to jaguars, iguanas, white-tailed deer and so many birds!
Guests kept busy with many service projects during the morning. Many worked in the hot sun sorting micro-plastics from the sand. Plastic pollution is a continuing problem and we hope that seeing the issue first-hand will encourage our guests to minimize the amount of plastic waste they create. We also continued work building a fence to keep people from stepping into the delicate ecosystems, blocking off old trails to the beach to control the flow of people onto the property.
Guests worked hard to finish clearing space to build a picnic area to keep people from eating on the beach. They completed that project by constructing a fence around the area and picnic tables as well. Xcacel strives to teach people the importance of ecological conservation, and encourages visitors to the beach to keep it clean for themselves, others and the turtles. The sun shined all day, and we enjoyed fresh local food, Spanish guitar music and had time to swim in the beautiful Caribbean Sea! The guests from Girls Just Wanna Weekend helped us complete our last Day of Service for this event season with smiles and hard work! It is always amazing to see how much work can be completed with many hands!
Donation Drive - Thank you all for donating!
Thank you to everyone that donated to the Positive Legacy donation drive this year! We took boxes and backpacks full of school supplies to Xcacel to be distributed among children all around the region during an event that occured the day after our Day of Service. The medical supplies were brought to Central Vallarta, the community near Puerto Morelos where we funded a medical clinic late last year. Your donations will make the community members’ lives a little brighter and we thank you for bringing an outstanding amount of supplies!
We are so thrilled to announce that Positive Legacy was able to raise over $27,000 in this year’s charity auction! Auction proceeds will support Positive Legacy’s continued environmental & humanitarian projects in Mexico and our work with Xcacel. It was incredible to see all of the GJWW Fans show up excited to take home one-of-a-kind art, including swag from their favorite musicians, vacation getaways and a signed guitar. Thank you to all of the Brandi Carlile fans who bid in the auction and made this first year event such a success! We raised $2,950 to support Looking Out Foundation, Brandi's non-profit, aimed at amplifying the impact of music by empowering those without a voice. Big thank you to the musicians and their management, the fans and artists for supporting the auction with their custom donations, and Josh Timmermans and Dave Vann for their amazing photography.
A special thank you must go out to players for creating a very entertaining BINGO afternoon benefiting Positive Legacy. Even some afternoon rainshowers couldn’t stop the enthusiasm (and pool dance parties!) from all the fans. Both the Girls Just Wanna and the 1980’s-themed BINGO games were rewarding entertainment for everyone in the Hacienda pool area. Prizes were numerous and we were able to raise $1400, a great success for the first year!
