Positive Legacy Programming at Girls Just Wanna Weekend 2020

Positive Legacy 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization’s mission is to integrate music and service to benefit people and the environment. Working in conjunction with Cloud 9 Adventures, Positive Legacy has coordinated service projects for destination events in many different countries throughout the years. Fueled by the power of music, and a passion for sustainability, Positive Legacy strives to transcend cultural boundaries by learning about the needs & aspirations of the communities we visit & serving them with action from musicians and fans!

Girls Just Wanna Weekend is an opportunity for a new kind of adventure, where strangers become friends, foreign lands become home, and fresh experiences are waiting to be discovered. Read on for how you can get involved with Positive Legacy while in Mexico!

Day of Service & Sustainable Experience

Join Positive Legacy at Xcacel Beach for a Day of Service and ecological conservation! The beautiful beach is one of the only remaining undeveloped beaches on the Yucatan Peninsula which turtles come to nest every year.

Xcacel focuses on the preservation of nesting grounds for sea turtles of the Caribbean. The park is open to the public for a fee for the months of December to April and closed for hatching season from May to November.

In July 2019, Positive Legacy provided a $20,000 grant to the Sanctuary for their housing project. The Phase One project will consist of building a permanent second story structure on to the existing park office to house volunteers throughout the hatching season, approximately 28 individuals. The volunteers assess the health of the mothers, collect data on tags and size, date and protect the nests throughout the night. Nests typically take two months to hatch and when they do, the volunteers help transfer the baby sea turtles from the nest closer to the ocean. In addition to the volunteer housing, we will remodel of the existing restrooms in conjunction with replacing the plumbing infrastructure to the septic system to adequately treat the waste the

park generates throughout the year.

We are excited to be returning to the park for a 2nd year of Day of Service activities! We will s

pend the morning working on various projects in conjunction with 3 additions Day of Service events in 2020. Our projects include: removing invasive plants, laying the groundwork for the

new Xcacel Welcome Center and cleaning up the beach, to name a few.  After completing the morning projects, we will celebrate with music, enjoy authentic Mexican lunch and have the opportunity to go swimming in the beautiful Caribbean sea.

Carbon Offset - Trees, Water & People

Positive Legacy and Trees, Water & People make it easy to travel responsibly by offsetting the emissions from your travel to Mexico for Girls Wanna Weekend. Since our partnership began in 2007, we have planted over 200,000 trees that sequester CO2 and have provided 500 clean cookstoves to reduce emissions from cooking with firewood, improving family health. Together, we offer music festival attendees an opportunity to offset their CO2 footprint, including the emissions required to get you to the festival, plus your share of the festival emissions themselves. A CO2 offset is a voluntary donation to TWP that helps us fund these initiatives in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Empower yourself to leave a Positive Legacy at Girls Wanna Weekend by OFFSETTING YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT HERE…because every party has an impact!

Positive Legacy Recap at Girls Just Wanna Weekend 2019

Funds raised at the inaugural Girls Just Wanna Weekend supported a wide variety of grant projects Positive Legacy supports across the Caribbean!  Here is the recap from the Positive Legacy events at Girls Just Wanna Weekend 2019:

Day of Service & Cultural Connection with Positive Legacy

It was a perfect day for work at Xcacel, a local Turtle Sanctuary, run by the organization Ibanqroo. After a night out enjoying music by The Indigo Girls and others, guests woke up early and  joined us to do important service work and give back.

At Xcacel we work hard protecting, educating and supporting the flora and fauna in their community, on the beach and in the surrounding jungle. Four types of turtles nest here every year, and it’s also home to jaguars, iguanas, white-tailed deer and so many birds!

Guests kept busy with many service projects during the morning. Many worked in the hot sun sorting micro-plastics from the sand. Plastic pollution is a continuing problem and we hope that seeing the issue first-hand will encourage our guests to minimize the amount of plastic waste they create. We also continued work building a fence to keep people from stepping into the delicate ecosystems, blocking off old trails to the beach to control the flow of people onto the property.

Guests worked hard to finish clearing space to build a picnic area to keep people from eating on the beach. They completed that project by constructing a fence around the area and picnic tables as well. Xcacel strives to teach people the importance of ecological conservation, and encourages visitors to the beach to keep it clean for themselves, others and the turtles. The sun shined all day, and we enjoyed fresh local food, Spanish guitar music and had time to swim in the beautiful Caribbean Sea! The guests from Girls Just Wanna Weekend helped us complete our last Day of Service for this event season with smiles and hard work! It is always amazing to see how much work can be completed with many hands!

Donation Drive - Thank you all for donating!

Thank you to everyone that donated to the Positive Legacy donation drive this year!  We took boxes and backpacks full of school supplies to Xcacel to be distributed among children all around the region during an event that occured the day after our Day of Service. The medical supplies were brought to Central Vallarta, the community near Puerto Morelos where we funded a medical clinic late last year. Your donations will make the community members’ lives a little brighter and we thank you for bringing an outstanding amount of supplies!

Charity Auction

We are so thrilled to announce that Positive Legacy was able to raise over $27,000 in this year’s charity auction!  Auction proceeds will support Positive Legacy’s continued environmental & humanitarian projects in Mexico and our work with Xcacel. It was incredible to see all of the GJWW Fans show up excited to take home one-of-a-kind art, including swag from their favorite musicians, vacation getaways and a signed guitar.  Thank you to all of the Brandi Carlile fans who bid in the auction and made this first year event such a success! We raised $2,950 to support Looking Out Foundation, Brandi's non-profit, aimed at amplifying the impact of music by empowering those without a voice. Big thank you to the musicians and their management, the fans and artists for supporting the auction with their custom donations, and Josh Timmermans and Dave Vann for their amazing photography.

Poolside BINGO

A special thank you must go out to players for creating a very entertaining BINGO afternoon benefiting Positive Legacy.  Even some afternoon rainshowers couldn’t stop the enthusiasm (and pool dance parties!) from all the fans. Both the Girls Just Wanna and the 1980’s-themed BINGO games were rewarding entertainment for everyone in the Hacienda pool area. Prizes were numerous and we were able to raise $1400, a great success for the first year!

Carbon Offset Your Travel Emission

Positive Legacy and Trees, Water & People made it easy to travel responsibly, by offsetting the emissions from your travel to Mexico for Girls Just Wanna Weekend. We appreciate those that donated $15 to the carbon offset program, which supports a community tree nursery that is producing 10,000 trees a year for rural communities on the north coast of Haiti, providing the sequestration of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide emissions. If you were unable to offset you footprint at the event, please take this opportunity to feel empowered post event and leave your own positive legacy from GJWW by visiting treeswaterpeople.org to make a donation!
